Big Shake - Every third Saturday monthly, a treat for true dancers. In the downstairs of Bar Loose, from 11pm to 4am, right after the early evening bands. Tickets 3 eur.

DJ LIAM LARGE (Jukebox Jam, UK) THE DON of greasy R&B, sleazy noise, dirty blues, killer ska, swingin’ mambo and wanton rock & roll & THE HEAD HONCHO of the London-based Jukebox Jam is TAKING OVER HELSINKI and the BIG SHAKE!

And of course the Big Shake resident Djs Sampsa Vilhunen & Vesa Yli-Pelkonen will be playing those 45s & 78s that’ll make you jump and shout! Down in the basement of Bar Loose (Annankatu 21, Helsinki), 11pm-4am, tickets 4 eur. Every third Sat monthly – Big Shake!

DJ Liam Large started the Jukebox Jam club in 2007, and it was inspired mostly by the R&B of the 1950s and early soul period of the 1960s and would feature live bands in the style. The night became popular through some positive word of mouth and contributed to a growing interest in both the music and the era. In 2009 a record label began as a subsidiary of Jazzman. Given total freedom, Liam programs, researches and sources all the releases, now running close to 50, and even does the artwork and design. The output is predominantly limited reissues of often forgotten or obscure vintage R&B - timeless music which comes right back to life on the 45rpm format. Liam has also directly compiled three full length compilations as an offshoot from the Jukebox Jam series - including the very well received Jukebox Mambo comp of Afro-Latin accented R&B. Liam is still running the Jukebox Jam night as an occasional party, along with the regular Blues Dance offshoot and DJ's regularly in London and across Europe and beyond.

It's been a while, hasn't it! We have been so busy with gigs and the radio show, that the Mixcloud posts for Big Shake have been lacking for a while. Today I pulled out in a matter of minutes some 80-90 records from the shelves that haven't been featured here before, and started putting things together. I ended up with this 60 min mix of 26 tracks, mostly 45s but with a few 78s as well. More by accident, I ended up with quite a strong emphasis Duke records, but also put a cocktail of Miss Lavell records in here, currently feeling these a lot! Btw, thanks to Dj Nasty Bartender for introducing the Four Tophatters track for me, had to get it asap after our joint gigs in Belgium and here it is from a stone cold mint 78! And how good are the Mariners, oh my lord, I need to confess it is probably my favorite track at the moment! Nuff said now into the mix folks!
